Into the Back Garden depicts the magical motifs I’ve been using in my work for over ten years which are inspired by living in wintery landscapes where snow blankets the ground for a good portion of the year. Places like northern Michigan, Vermont, and Norway. Living in a cold climate there is no excuse but to go outside, get in to nature, and play in the snowy landscape. I love to paint scenes from around the house and incorporate striped woolen clothes hanging on a line to dry, scratching into wet paint as evidence of activity leaving tracks in the snow, and whimsical objects from around the garden. I think of this painting as a sort of wintery scene where magical gnomes may live.
